The Lodge is designed to be self catering and is well equipped with all you will need to cook for yourself and others and has a 10 seat dining table for those social meals which can extend to a 12 seater. A large American style fridge freezer with water and ice making facilities alongside a range cooker and a dishwasher help with making those meals in something to remember. One rule of the house, "If you use it, clean it"
All bedding and towels are provided. Outdoor shoes are not to be worn in the Lodge, some people bring slippers but they are not required. If there are any planned military events at the time you are down it is worth bringing a blazer/smart clothes, you can get involved. Good walking shoes are desirable, make sure they are clean before you fly, making entering customs easier. A camera to capture your experiences on the islands. Be conscious of the weather, bring layers of clothes and a good coat, wash kit, a warm hat to protect your ears from any wind. British currency is accepted everywhere as are credit/debit cards, bringing some cash with you is a good idea. You will be staying in a room with people you may not know so make sure you have ear plugs in case they snore, They have fought in a war, reached a ripe old age and don't want to be hit on the head with a walking boot just because they snore.
Fruit and vegetables on the Islands are quite expensive as it isn't easy to cater for the population with the growing conditions, so some have to be shipped in. You are allowed to bring in 5kg of fruit on to the Islands which you can use for your stay for personal consumption. If there are a group of veterans travelling together it is worth discussing beforehand so you can maybe bring different fruits and share the load. A guide to what fruits are acceptable is available to download. Be aware: the weight of fruit you bring comes out of your baggage weight allowance and is not in addition.
There is a washing machine and dryer, iron and ironing board all available for your return from climbing mountains and kneeling in the penguin poop. We ask if it is dry outside you use the outside washing line whenever possible.
The Falkland Islands uses UK power throughout and the Lodge is plentiful with 230v sockets in all rooms.
All doors in the Lodge are wheelchair friendly and there is a gentle slope outside leading to the front door for easy access.
One of the rooms has an en-suite walk in bath so if you need this facility please let us know on booking.
The Lodge is a no smoking/no vaping building for the comfort of all our guests. We ask, should you with to smoke/vape, you do so on the outside patio where there is seating available
Courtesy of SAMA Falkland Islands (not to be confused with SAMA (82)) , limited wireless access is available in the Lodge for the use of our guests. Once the limit is reached for the day then all internet access is cut off so we ask that you save uploading of your photos and videos or sending/downloading large files is saved until you get home. Sensible use of the internet for email/ web browsing and the odd call home on whatsapp or similar should prevent the internet going off. Turn off synching of files/photo's on your phones and laptops for your time here. Internet cards are available to purchase from the office which can be used from hotspots around the islands should you so wish.
Use of the internet between midnight and 0600 is free and does not use up any of the limit.
Transport to and from the airport can be provided through Penguin Travel to the Lodge. Please let the office know in advance if you require this. There is currently a £10 charge each way for this service payable in full on your arrival at the Lodge.
Courtesy of SAMA Falkland Islands (not to be confused with SAMA (82)) There are a couple of vehicles available for self drive at the Lodge. You will need a full (CLEAN) driving license to hire these out at a cost of £25 per day + any fuel used. To satisfy insurance requirements you will also need to provide your National Insurance number and driving license on arrival at Liberty Lodge prior to hiring any vehicle.
All vehicles are to be left clean inside and out once you have finished with them. They are NOT to be driven off road. Speed limits across the island are to be adhered to (max current speed limit is 40mph).
All the years have passed since 1982 and the Falkland Islanders continue to be extremely grateful for everything veterans have done for them. Some very generous people will volunteer to spend the day with you and drive you to places, telling you the history and will provide stories that even if you fought in that place you won't know it all. For this reason it is important that you let Liberty Lodge office know of your plans/itinerary in advance.
Please keep the office informed of your plans during your stay. If they have pre-arranged drivers to take you out for the day and you have already gone out or arranged something yourself then the volunteer drivers may not want to volunteer again.
This way the office can make sure you get the very best out of your time on the islands and will do their hardest to make sure you get to see what you want. There are tourist organisations and individuals who, given notice, can accomodate most needs. Driving on the islands has become much easier given the tarmacced roads so using the Lodge vehicles you can also consider driving yourselves.
Should you wish to fly a British military flag during your stay with us we do have flagpoles available for use. You will need to bring the flag with you.
The Falkland Islands are GMT -3 which is important to know if you plan on phoning home and even more important when your wife phones you at 8am and its 5am your time.
